The formulaic pop of \"Wherever You Are,\" Ingram's #1 single--reprised like the bubblegummy \"Love You\" from an earlier album--is standard-issue Nashville, as is \"featuring\" Sheryl Crow on \"Hold On,\" but then burying her vocals in the mix. But Ingram makes up for such transgressions with his deliciously lubricated cover of Hinder's \"Lips of an Angel\" and with his own finely-drawn songs of family (the folkish \"Ava Adele\") and the Lone Star landscape that produced him (\"Great Divide\"). The question is whether Ingram wants to be a star or an artist. His label, Big Machine, is trying to let him be both. But that can only last so long. --Alanna Nash\n\nReview\n\nGetting ready to take the country by storm\nMarch 25, 2007 If you can't find something to like on Jack Ingram's new \"This Is It\" (Big Machine) album, you don't like country music.\nThe Dallas singer-songwriter offers the full spectrum, from the tender, acoustic alt-country of \"Ava Adele\" to the Southern-fried rock of \"Great Divide\" to the catchy country pop of \"Maybe She'll Get Lonely\" and \"Hold On,\" which features harmonies from Sheryl Crow. Ingram even manages to turn Hinder's \"Lips of an Angel\" into something more listenable, stripping back the overproduction and over-the-top vocals of the original and tapping into the sentiment a bit more with some nice, understated fiddle and weeping guitar touches.\nWhat holds \"This Is It\" together is Ingram's likable, regular-guy vocals and his knack for offering the exactly right delivery for whatever song he's singing. He's sly in the ready-for-radio \"Love You,\" trying not to swear throughout the song so he can deliver the line, \"There's only one four-letter word that'll do - love you.\" He gives \"Measure of a Man\" just enough emotion to work through the daddy issues, and finding forgiveness and the right woman.\nThough Ingram has come close to country superstardom before, \"This Is It\" will be it. Famous in Texas for more than a decade, the charismatic singer-songwriter busted out nationally in 2006 with his first No. 1 country hit, \"Wherever You Are,\" and a successful follow-up, \"Love You.\"\nHis new album reflects the shift, too. He smooths some edges on \"This Is It,\" but fortunately he hangs onto his knack for provocative lyrics, personal angles and catchy, tightly written tunes.\n\"This Is It\" only sounds calculated on its first single, an unnecessary cover of the rock band Hinder's recent hit ballad, \"Lips of an Angel.\" Ingram imposes his gravelly twang onto the challenging vocal arrangement, but otherwise does little to make it his own.
