Amazon.com There may have been no other singer in jazz with Sarah Vaughan's mix of gifts, from the sheer richness of her sound, so different in her upper and lower registers and so variable, to her inventive and absolute control of pitch for the subtlest and most telling inflections. This all-ballad program, culled from her EmArcy recordings of the '50s, represents her greatest period, and while the selection appears intended to function as mood music, it's hard to put Vaughan's voice in the background. She's more than ably supported by her regular accompanists of the period, pianist Jimmy Jones, bassists Joe Benjamin and Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes, as well as an assortment of horns and strings and guest soloists like Cannonball Adderley. There's scarcely a weak tune in the lot, and when there is, e.g., "I Won't Say I Will, but I Won't Say I Won't " Vaughan turns it into a showcase for sheer vocal brilliance. Her 1954 performance of Kurt Weill's "September Song," arranged by Ernie Wilkins for a sextet and featuring the great trumpeter Clifford Brown, is a masterpiece, standing out even in this collection. --Stuart Broomer Product description International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
