The Hammond B-3 organ is in good hands with Larry Goldings, whose appealing approach has landed him employment with ex-James Brown saxman Maceo Parker and modern guitar whiz John Scofield. Like many of his peers, Goldings has been strongly influenced by the Hammond organ's great 1950s and '60s scion Jimmy Smith, as well as postbop organ genius Larry Young. He works with a buoyant yet rich sound and delivers melodic ideas that make you pat your foot--he can swing, you bet--and that make you think. Moonbird teams Goldings with his decade-long triomates--stellar guitarist Peter Bernstein and monster drummer Bill Stewart--for a program of winners, most written by the leader. For funk à la Goldings, there's "Crawdaddy," where he and Bernstein drop in fluid then punched ideas over Stewart's undulating beat. Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" and Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" are both agreeably pop-flavored yet meaty. "Comfort Zone" is a relaxed groover, where warm melodic playing from the leader and Bernstein is showcased. On "Xoloft," Goldings cooks with feeling at a fast tempo; in contrast, "Empty Oceans" is slow and dreamy. --Zan Stewart
