Product Description The sound of the Sape brings out the dignity in people and connects them to the forest. It also invokes the Spirit of the Dayung during the traditional Dayung ceremony. The Spirit of the Dayung is used to heal people and the community as well as monitor the condition of the community. The Dayung will sing when the Sape stops; the Sape is a vehicle to reach the Dayung Realm. These recordings were made at two different sessions. The first track was recorded by Tim Norris at the house of Jok Jau in Marudi, Malaysia. The remaining tracks were recorded by Jok Jau himself at various times. The multiple voices are all those of Jok Jau as he over-dubbed multiple tracks onto one tape. There is a small loss of quality for the final tracks, but we feel that the music suffers little for this. About the Artist Jok Jau Evong is an artist and activist of outstanding character. His tireless efforts to preserve and build the culture of the Kayan people in Borneo have been noticed by many. The Malaysian government does not allow him to leave his hometown of Marudi, Malaysia. The Borneo Project (of Berkeley) gives constant support to his efforts for the people and forests of Borneo. He holds the 'Right Livelihood' award. Now he has published a CD of the music of his people. As requested by Jok Jau Evong, all of the proceeds from this disc will go to the Uma Bawang Residents Association. UBRA is dedicated to cultural preservation and the development of sustainable futures for the Kayan people living in Uma Bawang-Keluan and the surrounding rainforests of Borneo.
