Carole King's 11 songs for the "Really Rosie" TV special (it originally aired in 1975) came from characters found in Maurice Sendak's books The Sign on Rosie's Door and Nutshell Library, but it can easily be argued that the characters never really lived until given voice by King. Ostensibly the story of Rosie--a little girl from Avenue P, who, dontcha know, is a star just waiting to be discovered--there are other delightful characters here, including Johnny ("who lived by himself and liked it like that!") and Pierre (who learns to care after being eaten by a lion). There are also a couple of straight-up educational songs: one an alphabet song (the wonderfully alliterative "Alligators All Around"), the other a calendar song ("Chicken Soup with Rice"). Great music that's delightful for children and parents alike, Really Rosie remains a family favorite for all the right reasons. --Randy Silver

Review
What a joy! Carole King's 1975 pop album, based on Maurice Sendak's book, "Really Rosie Starring the Nutshell Kids," has returned, and it's available for the first time on CD. Newly mastered, this release (originally on Lou Adler's Ode Records label) is a series of memorably written and performed songs revolving around 10-year-old, "great big deal" Rosie. The leader supreme of her Brooklyn block, Rosie gives credit to "My Simple, Humble Neighborhood" for her greatness, harbors a fierce wish to be Mrs. Dracula ("The Awful Truth"), and celebrates "Chicken Soup With Rice." There are others, too: Pierre, the "I Don't Care" kid, who encounters a lion and loses his apathy; "Alligators All Around" who help with the alphabet; and Johnny, star of the quirky counting song, "One Was Johnny," who chases off rowdy guests because he lives a solitary life "and liked it like that." King and Sendak are an absolutely irresistible team, and their magic is for adults and kids alike. A 1999 Parents' Choice® Gold Award Winner.
