Product Description
Bobi Céspedes is a singer, composer and percussionist as well as a priestess in the Yoruba-Lucumi spiritual tradition. Her solo debut couples deep Afro-Cuban and Yoruban grooves with one of the most distinctive and compelling voices in world music.
Bobi has been gathering acclaim both with her 12-piece ensemble Conjunto Céspedes and as a featured vocalist with Mickey Hart's Planet Drum and Bembé Orisha bands. Produced by Greg Landau (Susanna Baca and Patato) Rezos marks the solo debut of an emerging global diva.
"Bobi's voice is an instrument equally capable of summoning orisha and filling dance floors"-Folk Roots Magazine

The term old school means different things to different people. For singer-percussionist Bobi Céspedes, who is a Yoruba-Lucami priest, it means going all the way back to 400-year-old African religious and musical traditions. Céspedes herself grew up in Cuba, but immigrated to San Francisco 40 years ago and has spent many years performing on her own and with Mickey Hart's Planet Drum. Here, on her long-overdue debut, she draws upon a broad swath of history, mining the Afro-Cuban traditions and ancient chants that are dedicated to her patron saint Orisha. Nonetheless, she is also very much in the here and now, creating some hot salsa-style arrangements, hip-hop beats, and modern Bay Area grooves that wouldn't be out of place in one of the hipper clubs in San Francisco or Paris. The album is an all-inclusive, multicultural, multigenerational approach that is winning. It also points out that a highly developed sense of tradition need not be an overriding burden. --Tad Hendrickson
