The legends describe a peaceful retreat from the outside world, a tranquil place of renewal and refreshment for body and mind, and for receiving spiritual nourishment and secret knowledge. In some of the myths there are ordeals, riddles or tests that one must pass through before entering Sanctuary. Often the entrance is guarded by savage beasts or it lies across a vast desert or stormy sea. In some versions of the Sanctuary legend it appears as a lush garden, protected by a surrounding wall or barrier… filled with peaceful birds, running water and pools, winding pathways leading to special buildings and bridges…and of course, the gentle music of harp and flute and other magical sounds. Once we had a clear picture of Sanctuary, we then composed music which evokes the experience of what it would be like to visit there. ! For each of the movements we used actual musical scales from cultures which possess a version of the Sanctuary archetype. We invite you to close your eyes, relax and spend some time within the secret world of Sanctuary.
