Kurt Elling's unique mix of scat, vocal pyrotechnics and poetry resulted in a Blue Note debut that earned the young Chicagoan a Grammy nomination. On the Messenger, he has his way with some jazz chestnuts ("April in Paris," "Prelude to a Kiss"), as well as his own compositions (a small suite of 3 romantic originals by Elling and his gifted pianist Laurence Hobgood).
