From the late 1950s until the early '70s, Jim Copp and Ed Brown produced some of the most inventive children's music ever created. Their self-produced albums are filled with clever stories, a rich vocabulary, and whacky sound effects. This is nothing like the folk-based children's storytelling of Raffi, as Copp and Brown owe more to radio theater and cabaret music than Pete Seeger. Their musical creations are unforgettable, describing a world where a dog enrolls at Yale, teachers are far too cranky for their own good, and socialite turkeys wear satin. Thimble Corner dates from 1960 but it still sounds fresh today. It's one of their finest efforts and, along with 1958's Jim Copp Tales, it belongs in every kid's music collection. A gem. --Jason Verlinde
